learning to walk
There was an interesting article in NY Mag recently, on walking. Specifically, how because of shoes, we walk in a way that is seriously damaging us. By age 40, 80% of us have some muscular-skeletal foot or ankle problem. By 50-55 that goes up to 90-95%.

Basically, because we're used to wearing shoes, we walk such that our heel hits the ground first, which sends massive shock into our ankles, knees & hips. Ideal would be to be barefoot and walk properly, but this is hardly practical in a city.

One of the possible solutions they do mention is the Vivo Barefoot. It looks like this:

It's basically a fancy schmancy moccasin. Puncture proof 3mm thick kevlar sole, extra wide (so you can use your toes when walking), so light & flexible you can roll them up.

Walking around Manhattan in my boots for 6 hours at a stretch resulted in me having pain in my hips. For a guy my age, this is somewhat disconcerting. It got me thinking more seriously about walking.

So, when I was in London, I picked up a couple of pairs of these shoes. On, they look like this:

('scuse the filthy mirror)

I wore them around town today, and the first few blocks, I've gotta say, it HURT. I felt every step as my heel slammed into the ground. Even more interesting was watching my body roll around, trying to figure out how to move itself so the pain would stop. Within half an hour or so, I found myself instinctively fox walking (longish but interesting article on learning to walk). I need to practice more, but so far it resulted in near zero impact of ANY kind on my heel or ankle (in fact, my ankle just kisses the ground), and a definite feeling of using my calves, abs and thighs.. but then, that's what they're there for, right? Once I'd settled into it, the immediate tactile feedback was very like getting reflexology with every step. Can't wait to see what THAT clears.

In other news, I bought some fruit & veg today:

hot damn I can't wait to dig into that lot.

I figure that should last me 3 or 4 days. I'm also keeping track of my calorie count (a concerned friend in the UK was worried I wasn't taking enough in & insisted I track it for a week). That should be interesting too.

well, the choices aren't just "comfortable" or "sub-par" - there ARE other options you know :)

Also, with the joints hurting etc - that's because you're walking wrong (as everybody does). Trick is to change how you walk. Even with the best shoes on the planet, you're still going to mess up your joints if you're walking incorrectly - & this is exactly what's happening in America.

my feet dont hurt with nice shoes

nor do my bones or my hips

joints hurt from too much fluoride in water causing weak bone formation to some degree? and just bad diet aka TOO MUCH FAT , so joints have bad weight load on them to support it, and other factors like A LACK OF WALKIN , and driving everywhere so lack of muscle to keep the bone fit?

and many other reasons i suspect

of course walking on bare feet would be good, if you had no western world issues and lived in a cave

well, that's exactly the deal with these shoes. They allow you to walk exactly the same as you would barefoot, but your feet are still protected.

That's why they're so cool!

im not sold till i try them for a week without sore bones, if i walk bare foot my bones die, my feet wrapped around themselves bone wise and i had metal boots for years as a kid to fix them :P

so not sold but valid idea hehe

Well, as with all things. It's your body, you get to look after it :)

I'm definitely finding that wearing them is helping me, and it's incredibly noticeable how much lower the impact is on my body - which is what I was primarily concerned about. Of course, my body is completely different from your body.....

i gather you walk a lot? ive never managed more than 2 hours walking in a day without days of pain after :)

so im impressed by your 6 hours, can you do more now?

I don't normally, no. Which is probably why the 6hrs (particularly on concrete) caused me pain. However, I reckon once I get well used to these shoes, I could walk all day and have no effects whatsoever - simply because there is near zero impact, which means no strain on my body (except muscular, but that's fine, muscles are designed for strain)

I'll let you know how things go next time I end up doing extended periods of walking.

you know, thinking about this a bit further, I'd add the following:

a) if walking around barefoot for an extended period of time doesn't adjust how you walk, or
b) it causes you pain (for whatever reason - in your case, perhaps genetic abnormalities)

then I definitely wouldn't recommend these shoes.

For most people, I'd say it's a way of walking barefoot without messing up your feet (broken glass, concrete, etc), or having to wait for your feet to toughen up. For you, however, you may genuinely need permanent orthopaedic support.

Of course, there's also the argument that you can (if you desire) heal all these sorts of problems, but that's a whole OTHER conversation *grin*

yeah, it's crazy. They sell them on Neal St in London, and Elizabeth St in Manhattan. You can also buy them off the web, but you'll need to know what size you are.

Apparently they've just received orders in America for three THOUSAND pairs - so I guess you're not the only one who read that article and went "but of course!"

Yes, I'd be concerned about getting enough calories too if you are completely raw vegan, unless you are tucking into more raw chocolate ^_^

seriously, have some sashimi occasionally at least! nom nom nom.

well, I've had well over 3500 calories today (first day counting), so I think I'm doing just fine. For someone my size & weight, I suspect that's plenty.

Be interesting to see how the rest of the week goes. It IS harder than just plunking a big fatty steak/burger/pizza/fries/etc on my plate, there's no question about that.

Okay, I just *have* to ask what you're eating to get that kind of calorie count, I have *tons* of nuts and I'm rarely over 2000!!

Do you eat like, a dozen avocados a day or something??

ok, without typing out the entire page (a bit tedious, there's 25 things on it), my biggest calorie counts today were from 3 bananas (655), 1/2 a rock melon (435), dark chocolate (358), a can of coconut cream (267), an orange (238), 1/2 a lettuce (226). That's 2179 right there.

Then a bunch of other stuff as well.

I just weighed everything, and used typical counts from calorie-count.com. A bit tedious to start with, but I've got a basic list of calorie/grams for everything common I eat now, so should be straight forward from here.

Interestingly, avocados only have 1.7 calories/gram. A lot more than any other vegetable (most are 0.5/g and well under), but way less than nuts (typically around 6/g).

Heh, I couldn't eat more than 1 banana a day, or anywhere near a half a rockmelon! I do love fruit salad though, that would probably be about 1/4 of my calories most days, then a big boost juice most lunchtimes and nothing else til 5, but then I have veges or salad and meat for dinner most evenings, plus some nuts, and that's it, I'm stuffed. I marvel at your ability to eat!

you know, we must seriously have some psychic connection, or be following the same path. first the genius website, now the barefooted ethos. ;)

i'm planing to get myself some vibram fivefinger (google 'em if interested) shoes while in SF (because no where in New Zealand sells them!).

i read an awesome article about barefooted running, that's what some of the african olympic marathon runners do, and there are these tribes that run 80 km over a couple of days and the only reason they can is that they run in barefeet which reduces joint injury and is also much more efficient.

i started fox running, and for the first two weeks it was painful both joint/muscle-wise and with blisters in places not used as much.

once you get your head around fox walking/running, it's pretty sweet though, isn't it. I'm just at the point where I'm starting to relax my body a little bit, get into the swing of it - ie, less effort for same response.

Yep, heard of the vibram five finger. Mostly I'm looking for something a little bit more 'respectable' - ie, I can wear them and still dress relatively up market.

And yeah, it's tough buying things in this part of the world. Lucky flights are so cheap :)

It's alright because I don't mind looking like a freak ;)

(which is because I can get away with out looking "respectable" most of the time)

Still, I might consider getting some normal looking barefooters so I can go into respectable establishments at night if necessary...

The main problem with fox running for me is that I was using normal running shoes, which messes with the natural rhythm/balance, and my feet weren't tough enough to handle bare feet.

The good thing about these shoes is that you do get SOME padding. It definitely makes a difference.

and yeah, it's that "respectable nighttime establishment" thing - haven't found a solution yet.

cool, will do.

Pretty curious about it. Had a look at the code, but it was very sparsely commented, and I didn't feel like spending more than half an hour trying to figure it out (ie, the 5+ hours it probably would have taken)

Just shout when your brain is working again :)

The way we walk with shoes on is pretty natural. I couldn't imagine these shoes doing anything besides create problems because it forces us into unnatural positions.

Ergonomic devices look and feel awkward for a reason - they go against the way our brains have been wired, and against how our body is used to feeling things. I would never wear those shoes - my feet are perfectly comfortable right now.

Oh, and I'm fairly certain that they wouldn't have my size anyway. :o)

heh, yeah. I was REALLY unsure about the red on them to start with.. then I thought "ok, if you can't AVOID the weird, might as well embrace it".. there were MUCH less colourful versions.. and I have bright green pair. hehe, people STARE at me when I walk down the street.. it's.. kinda funny actually.

they also have red stitching on them, which is rather nice.

oh, and YUM. thank you. what a great idea. Just need to buy some red pepper and coriander to go with the celery (runs off to the market, again :) )

a) it's impossible to walk fast in them, so if I'm in a real hurry to get somewhere, I'll wear other shoes. this probably isn't a bad thing, since fast walking = longer strides = heel hitting first with out stretched leg = higher impact.

b) when I first started wearing them, I was instinctively fox walking (ball of feet hits ground first). it's since changed again, and I now walk with a much more even foot fall (rather than heel first, like normal shoes)

c) when I'm walking in regular shoes, the habit persists (which is probably a good thing)

It has been an interesting thing, watching my body adapt to them, but I definitely still wear them regularly, and they're still my favourite shoe.
